Source: A bicyclist killed Tuesday when she was hit by a truck in the Cherry Creek North section of Denver was a 23-year-old woman, the city’s medical examiner’s office said Wednesday. Gelseigh Karl-Cannon, of Denver, was rushed to Denver Health Medical Center after the crash, which happened about 11 a.m. near East First Avenue and Clayton Street, city fire officials said. Witnesses told police it appeared Karl-Cannon hit a curb and fell and then was hit by a passing truck. She died of “complications of pelvic crush injury,” according to the medical examiner’s office, which ruled her death an accident. The truck driver, whom police have not identified, will not face charges, Denver police said Wednesday. The case, however, remains under probe. Denver has experienced several high-profile fatalities involving cyclists this year, including the May 31 death of Masoud Bahramisharif, a 24-year-old University of Denver student hit and killed by a hit-and-run driver near the campus as he walked his bicycle through a crosswalk, and on July 22, bicyclist Daniel Peterson, 30, was killed by a hit-and-run driver at Speer Boulevard and Lincoln Street at 2:20 a.m. A cyclist was injured Sunday morning in Jefferson County, and another was seriously injured Monday in Boulder. In a study released in May on pedestrian and cyclist safety, the Denver Regional Council of Governments said that of 2,167 traffic fatalities in the region from 2001 through 2010, about 17 percent, or 373 people, were pedestrians, and 3 percent, or 53 people, were cyclists. The study noted, however, that while pedestrians make up 20 percent of the fatalities, they account for 2.4 percent of miles of travel in the Denver metro region.
