Source: Well-known Boulder athlete Terence “T.J.” Doherty has died from injuries he sustained when he was hit by a car in the same intersection where another cyclist was killed in 2009. Doherty, 32, died at Boulder Community Hospital on Tuesday, according to hospital officials. The well-known runner was bicycling on Violet Avenue north of Boulder on Sunday when the accident occurred. Friend Matt Hill said he first met Doherty shortly after moving to Boulder from Arkansas in 2004. Doherty, originally from Ohio, had also recently moved to Boulder. The two met at a weekly Fleet Feet fun run and bonded over their shared passion for running. Hill said Doherty, who moved to Boulder to teach high school Spanish, immersed himself in Spanish culture. “He stood out,” Hill said. “He didn’t seem like a typical Midwestern type of guy. The very first time I met him it was at a fun run at Fleet Feet, and afterwards he pulls out a flamenco-type guitar. I got a kick out of that and I said, ‘Who is this guy? This guy is hilarious.'” Hill said he kept in touch with Doherty while he worked to earn his master’s degree in Spanish, spending part of the time in Madrid. Doherty used his language skills in his job at Spectra Logic. He also recently became engaged to Dutch runner Adrienne Herzog, whom he met in Madrid, friends said. Hill went to a Fleet Feet run Monday night that traced the route of the first one Doherty participated in when he moved to Boulder. The events typically draw about 15 runners, Hill said, but Monday’s drew about 100 people. On Wednesday, friends in the Boulder running community will honor Doherty again at a tribute run. The run, which is open to the public, will start from the Boulder Running Co., 2775 Pearl St., at 6 p.m. and will include three- to six-mile routes at a variety of paces, organizers said. Runners are encouraged to show up early to register and call 303-786-9255 if they have questions. The Colorado State Patrol responded to a bicyclist hit by a car at about 5 p.m. Sunday on Violet Avenue north of Boulder, according to Trooper Nate Reid. A Volvo station wagon heading west on U.S. 36 turned left on Violet and hit Doherty. The driver of the Volvo, Kirk Condon, 59, didn’t see him, Reid said. Condon was ticketed on suspicion of careless driving. In September 2009, Casey Najera, 60, was riding his bike east on U.S. 36 when a westbound car made a left turn onto Violet, causing Najera to collide with the back of the vehicle. Najera was killed in the crash. The driver, who was ticketed for careless driving resulting in death, said she never saw him.
